DSR has always been known as a racing class for "tinkerers"; those owners who enjoy fiddling with their cars. That description includes everyone from innovative designers who literally build their own cars, to owners who are constantly making improvements to their existing cars.

Those drivers daring enough to build their own cars have traditionally been the foundation of the DSR class.

Other drivers realize the limitations of their design or fabrication capabilities, or simply lack the facilities to build their own car. These owners opt for a car designed or built by someone else. Over the years these types of cars have taken many forms; from "kit cars", to rollers (rolling chassis without engine), to turnkey (get in, turn the key, and drive away).
